Each year, we design, build, test and launch a high-powered rocket. In the last two years we have been in the forefront of student rocketry in the world, competing with solid motor rockets. Building on that experience, we are now going bigger…

For our next project, Propulse NTNU will design, produce, test and launch our first ever rocket with a bi-propellant liquid engine. This is an ambitious undertaking which requires a multitude of skills covering almost all disciplines of engineering. Below you can read more about each system you can apply for in order to make this project come to life.

Engine

The main objective of the engine development group is to design, produce and test a liquid rocket engine, capable of achieving over 3kN of thrust and propelling the rocket up to 3 km above the ground. The engine will be completely researched and developed in-house and will act as a foundation for future R&D as well as projects.

Engine

Mechanical

The mechanical groups are responsible for designing, testing and producing almost every part of hardware in the rocket. This includes the outer and inner structure, as well as the recovery system.

Mechanical

Avionics

The main function of the avionics systems is to control the engine and activate the two stages of recovery. This function has to be fulfilled by two completely independent sets of avionics. One set is a commercial solution, the other a self developed system.

In addition to controlling the rocket, the avionics system has to collect, store and transmit flight performance data. Avionics is also responsible for all electronics and software used to test the engine at our testsite.

Business & Finance

The department for business and finance is responsible for overseeing all financial transactions and fundraising efforts going into Propulse NTNU.

Our primary duties include budget planning, financial reporting, record-keeping, managing incoming and outgoing funds, day-to-day management of sponsor correspondence, overview over contracts and renewing the existing agreements.

Marketing

The marketing group is responsible for making students, sponsors and others aware of Propulse NTNU. This includes making people aware of what we do, engaging and showing them our project, as well as maintaining interest in our organization.

To do this we have roles as social media managers, graphic designers, videographers and an event manager to work together to promote Propulse.

Penumbra

The Penumbra software research and development group is responsible for long term development of relevant software for the Propulse team. The main focus of the group the previous years had been developing a trajectory simulator with a graphical user interface.

The focus for Penumbra this year will be innovating and improving the existing simulator framework, as well as looking into integration of computational fluid dynamics. This new venture may lead to a unique and very interesting software development project, which will yield great results for Propulse NTNU and student rocketry in general.

Mission Control

The Mission Control team works on a variety of tasks, such as maintaining Propulse's internal Confluence wiki page, and continuing development of a new website using React. Additionally, Mission control works together with Avionics ground station and the Marketing team to create a beautiful livestream of the rocket launch.
